Saint-Léon, Arthur

Saint-Léon, Arthur
(1821-1870)
   dancer, choreographer
Born in Paris, Arthur Saint-Léon was the son of the ballet master of the ducal theater of Stuttgart. He was also an excellent violinist as well as a brilliant choreographer, and occasionally composed the music for some of his ballets. Having married the italian dancer Fanny Cerrito, he created for her La Vivandière (1844). He made numerous visits to St. Petersburg, Russia to study dance (1859-69) and became ballet master for the opéra de Paris (1863-70). Several of his choreographies are still quite well known: La Fille de marbre (1847), Le petit Cheval bossu (1864), La Source (1866), and especially Coppélia (1870). Saint-Léon also took part in the revival of the great romantic ballets and created a system of dance notation known as steno-choreography (1852).
